Strawberry Plains Half Marathon / 10K
Saturday, February 19, 2005

It wasn't Expo, but a record-smashing crowd of more than 500 runners showed up in Strawberry Plains for the annual Strawberry Plains half marathon/10K.
Jefferson County's finest were on hand to ensure a safe traverse of the winding country roads along the Holston River.
Over a thousand running shoes burst into motion upon the sound of the starter's pistol.
Scot Shoemaker was second overall in the half marathon behind Denton Jones, who, despite five cameras snapping hundreds of shots, escaped being captured by any lens.
Carl Goins was third in the half marathon, fighting off a tenacious side stitch.
Newly appointed Tusculum coach Phil Roberts was the top masters half marathoner this year.
New Balance speedster Kelly Darnell was second woman in the half, behind Johnna French, who won her second straight KTC Winter Series race.  Unfortunately, we didn't get shots of her, either.
Allison Pastorek of EBS Racing was third overall female.
New papa Keith Gemeinhart took his first KTC Grand Prix victory by winning the 10K.
Molly Allen of Kingsport was the winner in the women's division of the 10K.
Many of us felt like we could've used four legs to climb those last couple hills.
And when we return to Strawberry Plains next February, the cool waters of the Holston River will still be flowing peacefully by.  We'll see you then!
