Greenways 5K
Saturday, April 2 2005

West High School was the host for the annual Greenways 5K race staged by the Knoxville Track Club on a grey and drizzly morning.
A brand new pair of Nike racing flats seemed unlikely to stay white on the slick surface of the greenway.
KTC's all-star duo of Angie Manis and Bob McLean were on the scene ensuring swift and accurate registration and results.
The signup for the race was quick and easy.
The turnout of 144 was pleasing in light of the unpleasant weather.
The sharp bark of the starter's pistol echoed through the air as the runners erupted into action.
A dozen dozen made their way toward the beautiful trail winding along the banks of Third Creek.
An unfamiliar face shot into the lead.
Eventual women's titlist Valerie Bachmann leads several men at the halfway point.
Bill Spierdowis streaked across the finish line first, taking the crown, running 17:29.
The owner of the racing flats, Keith Gemeinhart, managed to keep them rather clean en route to a second place overall finish in 17:45.
Runners Market's Mike Wortley began his comeback from the injury trail by claiming third place (17:51).
The fastest woman, Jasmin Keller, also broke eighteen minutes, finishing fourth overall in 17:57.
Ronnie Manis made it four Runners Market team members in a row, finishing fifth.
Beverly Leamon charged across the line in 21:58.
Folks young and old have always come out for the Greenways race, which benefits Knoxville and Knox County Greenways.
Cindy Spangler, Anne Wahlert and Laurie Gregory hatch a sinister plot after the race.
Ace musicians Danny Gammon and Don Cassell perform some stirring tunes for the postrace crowd's enjoyment
The winner with his award, a lovely sedum plant.  Greenways has an annual tradition of awarding beautiful plants, rather than little plastic men to gather dust on a shelf.
Wortley got one, too!
Despite the wintry weather, spring is most assuredly just round the corner, as evidenced by this beautiful lemon trillium standing just astride the trail.  See you next April at the Greenways 5K!
