Wears Valley 15K
Sunday, September 21, 2003

There was a taste of autumn in the air as participants gathered at the Best Western Valley View Lodge in Townsend TN for the annual running of the Wears Valley 15K.
KTC President Elizabeth Corbett (seated, dark hair) and Board Member Marge McLean (seated, navy/white jacket) were on hand to register runners for the race.
It was a rather small but intense group of racers that gathered at the starting line to hear last minute instructions from co-race director Bonnie Hinds (foreground, back to camera).
As the gun resounded through the valley, the competitors leaned into action and readied themselves to do battle with the hills and valleys of the Carr Creek Valley.
The early going was flat and easy, about the only easy terrain the runners would face in Wears Valley.
Kevin Phillips of Ooltewah took the early lead and held it all the way to collect the victory.
Robert Preston of Athens was second overall.
Jon Lawler raced through the hilly course and earned a third place overall finish.
Chattanoogan Mitch Keebler was the best masters runner on this day.
Melanie Cox of Knoxville was the second place female finisher behind Marsha Morton's strong winning performance.
Rita Mehta ran to a third place finish in the women's division.
Whitestone 30K co-race director Betty Schohl took the masters crown, outrunning many women ten years her junior in the process.

Elite, midpackers or back of the pack, everyone gave all they had at this year's Wears Valley 15K.

One of the Preston boys hams it up with Race Director Bonnie Hinds after the race.

And as the sun rose languidly into the cloud strewn sky, another great KTC event etched its legacy into the record books.  See you next year at the Wears Valley 15K!
