Smoky Mountain Half Marathon / 5K
March 23, 2003

The sights and sounds of early spring were very much in evidence as hundreds of runners descended on the Best Western Valley View Lodge in Townsend for the annual Smoky Mountain Half Marathon.

The beautiful indoor facilities made runners and spectators alike very comfortable in the prerace hours.

Results wizardess Angelique Blankenship pores over stacks of entry forms on race morning.

Half Marathon race director Julie McMahon assures a coworker that everything is ready for action.

The gathering throng assembled near the starting line as race time approached.

Last minutes matters are discussed by race director Julie and KTC Executive Director Allan Morgan.

5K race director Teri Stevens prepares the crowd for the starter's gun.

Just after the gun, the line of runners cruises swiftly down the narrow country lane, prepared to do battle with the elements, each other and themselves.

As always, KTC volunteers were willing and able.

Teri Stevens, 5K race director, addressed the throng as the awards ceremony commenced.

Soundmeister Richard French assisted with handing out the awards.

Pat Denton won a coffee mug and a handsome plaque for her efforts.

Culinary magicians Marge McLean and Gail Anderson whipped up some goodies in the kitchen.  The empty beer cans were not theirs.

Hungry roadies gobbled a slew of bagels and fruit after the race.  Thanks to all the volunteers, sponsors and participants of this year's events.  See y'all next time!
