The Stars and Stripes were hung high to celebrate Independence Day and the annual running of the Knoxville Track Club's Fireball Moonlight Classic 5K.
What looked at first glance to be a monstrous apparition proved to be the reassuring visage of Knoxville Fire Department First Responder equipment.
The emergency crew was, thankfully, not needed to perform any emergency duty.
Colorfully attired Race director Doug Anderson listens to some last minute information from Teri Stephens.
A huge crowd of ultrafast road racers anxiously awaited the starter's pistol shot.
Exemplary cooperation from the Knoxville Police Department made for a safe and successful race.
KTC's standout volunteer coordinator, Cindy Spangler, assembled an outstanding crew of volunteers.

The gun sounded while smoke from the exciting fireworks display still hung in the air.

This is what everyone was glad to see.
This is what everyone was even gladder to see.
Here's the guy who got there first, as usual, Bill Kabasenche.
Second place went to Andy Baksa of Belmont University, currently shuffling a few shoes at Runners Market while training for fall cross season.
Modeling the award winning umbrella design is Sean Stevens, former West High state champ, who currently competes for Wake Forest University.
Former Farragut High and UTC star Gina Recher was the top female competitor, blazing a 17:26 for the win.
Proud owner of a big-time PR, Betty Schohl was top masters racer on this night, breaking into the rarefied air of sub-21.
The crowd hung around for quite awhile, consuming mass quantities of drinks and food provided by generous KTC sponsors.
A sweaty family is quite proud of their accomplishments on this warm night.
A veritable mountain of bagels were consumed on the premises, courtesy of Best Bagels.
KTC Executive Director Allan Morgan teamed up with Race Director Doug Anderson to give out a myriad of awards and prizes.
These two canines were delighted with everything except the fireworks.
The Farragut Bo's were the team champs, edging the Runners Market team by less than a minute.
And, as everyone headed home after midnight, a gorgeous crescent moon hung lazily in the summer sky.  Please plan on joining the Knoxville Track Club in our showpiece race of the summer season next year at the Fireball Moonlight Classic 5K.
